Mission and History

The Tsing Hua Alumni Association of Northern California (THAA-NC) was established in 1982 by late Mr. Chia Lin Yuan ('36 ECON). It is a non-profit organization with no ties to any political or religious causes. The goal of the THAA-NC is set to bridge between the Alma Mater and its alumni. As for the areas of focus, they consist of:

1. Promoting communications between Tsinghua alumni,
2. Hosting various events catering to the alumni in the Bay Area, including but not limited to the annual reunion (around the last Sunday of April, to celebrate the school's anniversary) and various seminars, and
3. Collaborating efforts with the Beijing and Hsinchu campus administrations.

The membership of THAA-NC is open to all Tsinghua graduates, faculty, staff, their spouse and children. Since 1982, THAA-NC has steadily grown to over 1500 alumni in the database with hundreds of paid members. For the Open Policy China implemented in 1983, it is noteworthy that a growing number of Tsinghua graduates of Beijing elected to come to the United States for advanced studies, and settling in the Bay Area. In fact, Ms. Yaohua Zhang ('61 MECH ENG Beijing) became the first post 1949 era Beijing alumna to hold presidency of THAA-NC. From then on, the practice has been established for Beijing and Hsinchu Tsinghua fellows to rotate leadership of presidency every other year.

On a different note, it is an interesting observation that THAA-NC is seemingly a microcosm of the Asian market and its future. There is little doubt that a great number of Tsinghua fellows have played a key role in the research, development, and incubation of high-tech industry in both mainland China and Taiwan. On the other hand, many Tsinghua graduates have chosen to relocate back to mainland China or Taiwan or pursue other endeavors in Asia. Combined with the committed support from both Beijing and Hsinchu Tsinghua campus administrations and an increasingly-growing Alumni network, we look forward to an even brighter future for the THAA-NC.

北加州清华校友会（THAA-NC）于1982年由已故36级经济系校友袁家麟先生首创成立。校友会成立的宗旨在于联络母校和校友，是一个不含政治或宗教目的的非营利组织。校友会的主要工作，目的有三：

1. 促进清华校友彼此之间的联系；
2. 于每年4月最后一个周日校庆前后，在旧金山湾区举办校庆 活动，和不定期举办讲座等活动，增进校友交流和加强校友与母校的联络；
3. 与北京及新竹母校校领导及学校机构合作，服务广大校友。

凡 历年清华校友，教职员，及其眷属均欢迎参加校友会。从1982年来，校友会不断充实壮大，至今已有一千五百多注册校友。改革开放以来，北京清华校友来美求 学定居益众，很多在 湾区落地生根。自北京清华61级机械系校友张耀华执任校友会长以来，北加州清华校友会由此依例，由北京校友和新竹校友每年轮任会长一职，下有副会长及理事 会，分工合作，各司其职。

见微知著，从校友会的发展也可以看到亚洲科技经济的蓬勃发展。清华校友在两岸的高新科技的研究发展和 壮大上扮演了非常重要的角色，越来越多校友把湾区经验成功的带回了中国大陆和台湾。校友会在联络北京新竹两校校友、促进经验交流以及鼓励发展创业方面，做 出了不少努力，这些工作也受到广大校友的肯定。北加州清华校友会将朝这个方向继续努力。
